WELCOME TO VFW POST 754 EARL J. SANDERS

Teamwork ~ Leadership ~ Commitment
As yesterday's defenders of freedom, we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group.  Our common bond is the battlefield, whether it is service in the Persian Gulf, Korea, Kosovo, the war on terrorism or peace-keeping expeditionary campaigns. Support for families and loved ones of our patients

After the loss of a loved one, those left behind often experience a variety of powerful feelings and emotions. These emotions can be overwhelming and isolating.

For 13 months after one of our patients dies, our bereavement counselor provides bereavement services to their loved ones. These services include periodic "check-in” phone calls and monthly mailings about grief and strategies for coping. One-on-one counseling and grief education sessions are available if needed. We also encourage participation in one of our bereavement groups (below), which can be an important source of strength and support.

Bereavement support groups

Our bereavement support groups, led by the Hospice of the Fisher Home’s bereavement counselor, are open to loved ones of former patients and to the wider community. These groups give those who have suffered a loss the opportunity to express their grief and other emotions in a safe and supportive environment. Listening to the experiences of others fosters a sense of community and hope. Participants also gain important insights into the nature of grief and the healing process as well as strategies for day-to-day coping and for integrating this profound change into their lives.

Two kinds of groups are offered:

  • General Bereavement Support Group This 8-week general support group is for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one within the past year.

  • Partner/Spouse Loss Group This 8-week group is for adults who have experienced the loss of a partner or spouse within the past year.

Additional services

In addition to support groups, our bereavement counselor leads a variety of educational and supportive programs in the greater community, such as workshops on grief, memorial services for organizations that have lost a beloved colleague, and advice on talking to children about death.

For further information about one of these programs or to sign up for one of our bereavement support groups, please contact Norma Palazzo at (413) 549-0115 or npalazzo@fisherhome.org.

"I am so grateful for the Fisher Home's bereavement group.
I received love, understanding and permission to grieve."
